Sweden will impose a new online gambling tax

The Swedish government analyzes the prospects for imposing the online gambling tax. The new tax is going to be at the rate of 15–20% of proceeds of activity of online casinos. The novelty is a part of Swedish program of transition from partially monopolized online gambling market to the network of several operators working in the country. The largest consulting agency in the Northern Europe, Copenhagen Economics, published a report containing information about the plans of the Swedish authorities.
The document prepared on behalf of the Swedish trade association of online games justifies the rate of the tax in the amount of 15–20%. It does with the expectations of increasing the budget revenues from the taxes on the profit of foreign operators, which will be invited by the government for cooperation.
A low rate of the taxation will trigger to increase the number of competitors on the market as well as reducing the tax revenues to the state budget. At the same time, a tax rate higher than 20% will impact on reducing the number of companies able to compete on the Swedish market.
The Swedish government will announce the imposing the tax in March 2017, and then a decision will be considered by the Parliament in December.
